THE FABULOUS KILLER TOMATOES are a good time rockin' blues band with a little bit of country thrown in and some other stuff too. Guaranteed to get your toes tapping they take a whole bunch of pages from the past and polish them up so they're all shiney and new. Long time friends and occasional jam partners the members always threatened to form a real band one day. The story of who, what, when, where and why is below. Farther down is probably the only thing you really care about, the free MP3s. So go ahead, be our guest and help yourselves. Here's the current roster:
THERE ONCE WAS A FOURTH TOMATO, a singer by the name of Craig "Peck" McCracken. Had it not been for his influence there's a good chance The Fabulous Killer Tomatoes might never had existed. Way back in the mid 80s Craig and David had come off the road and were on the lookout to form a new act. Years before David and I played in a band (partied a lot too if I remember correctly) and had kept in contact. A mutual friend/drummer (Mal "MT" Ryall) was living at my place in the Toronto's Beaches area at the time. As it turned out David moved in, Craig went and nested with a girlfiend, we all partied some more and somewhere along the line the four of us started to jam. Didn't sound half bad but for my part I was rusty as all hell so wasn't expecting much. Good thing, 'cause eventually Craig and David went off to form Walter Ego. IT WAS SHORT BUT SWEET and we never did get a chance to play anywhere but it provided some inspiration. As for the name, well its obviously lifted from the motion picture Attack of the Killer Tomatoes and originally we just called ourselves the Killer Tomatoes. Like I said we never played anywhere but with a name like that its amazing how many people claimed to have heard of us, and even seen our show! Well that was a good thing and it provided a common point many years later when the boys got back together for a little jamming. By then Craig had moved out of the province so now it was just three. THREE OLD MUSICIANS, SOME BEER AND A BEDROOM, fill it with instruments and sound comes out. A couple of years under everyone's belt didn't seem to hurt, actually helped. Lots to be said for a more "mature" sound (sez the old guy). And thanks to Mal for giving up his spare bedroom (plus the infinite tolerance of his wife) we managed to get together a couple of times a week. Getting older means you sometimes have spare cash for toys and we spent ours on recording (and beer). At first live off the floor into a Teac VCR (don't chuckle the sound quality can rival CD) and later we were able to polish the demos at my place with some early digital gear (Akai DR4d). WE liKED WHAT WE HEARD AND MADE EVERYONE liSTEN and to our pleasant surprise friends and strangers alike thought we had a sound. Well that's just like putting out a carrot on stick to a musician, stroke our egos please, tell us ya like us. So off we went and spent a whole lots more on better recording gear, then a whole lot of time figuring out how to use it and then a bunch more time laying down tracks. Ended up with so much raw material half of it hasn't been finished (as of this date) but enough that we felt we had to put a name to it. The natural choice was Killer Tomatoes 'cause after all it was our big common point (and did I mention beer already?). But over the years we'd changed from rockers to being bluesy. And what do all good blues bands need in a name? Why an introductory blurb to spice up the anticipation. So now we were The "Fabulous" Killer Tomatoes, and guess what, even more people have heard of us. Shit I wonder what'd happen if we actually gigged? DOWNLOAD SOME MP3s, crank up the speakers, pop a cold one and enjoy. Here's a sample of some of the stuff The Fabulous Killer Tomatoes came up with, there's a description to go with each song so you'll know what your getting yourself into.
